----BEGIN CLASS---- [14:28] #startclass [14:28] Shubham Sharma [14:28] Roll call [14:28] Prashant Sharma [14:28] Naman Sharma [14:28] Prajit Mukherjee [14:28] Ashish Kumar Mishra [14:28] Shubham Sharma [14:28] Sahil [14:28] Rayan Das [14:29] Robin Schubert [14:29] Aman Verma [14:29] Shivam Goyal [14:29] Shiva Saxena [14:29] Anu Kumari Gupta [14:29] Priyanka Saggu [14:29] Mayank Singhal [14:29] Siddhant N Trivedi [14:29] Rishikesh Bamdale [14:29] Jagannathan Tiruvallur Eachambadi [14:29] tabrez khan [14:29] Prabhu Sharan Singh [14:29] <__rex__> Rakshit Airani [14:29] Vara Singh [14:29] Sandeep Kumar Choudhary [14:29] Pawan [14:29] Neeraj Kumar Arya [14:29] Souvik Haldar [14:30] pooja kumari singh [14:30] Vivek Shukla [14:30] Today, we will be discussion on three things - "Eatery, Exercise and Essentials" [14:30] I hope to allot 20 minutes for each, but, we will see how it goes [14:30] mbuf, okay [14:31] This is the first time we are having this session, as I felt that it is important [14:31] We will first talk about eating habits [14:31] Just as bad code can affect the system, your intake of food is very important [14:32] Food is a personal preference, but, I prefer to be vegetarian. I will encourage others as well [14:32] You need to eat a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits as part of your healthy diet [14:33] I am not a dietitian, but, you are welcome to consult one [14:33] Bhavesh Gupta [14:33] Vaibhav Kaushik [14:33] Some people may have allergies to certain types of food (sea food, mushroom etc.). So, you need to be aware of that, and avoid eating them [14:33] Your body has a biological clock, and hence, it is also important to eat at the right time [14:34] Similar to how computer clock skew can ruin the system, it is important to not break your biological rhythm [14:34] Some of you may eat large meals, but, others may eat small portions, but, every few hours [14:35] As far as possible, try to eat home cooked food. If it is not possible, and if you are eating outside, try to eat warm foods [14:35] Avoid junk food (fast food, soft drinks etc.) as much as possible [14:35] You also need to drink a lot of water, as it is good for the body [14:36] The most important point is when you are eating, your concentration should be on the food that you eat [14:36] I do not like to bring food into the computer room; YMMV [14:37] If you also watch TV, or use the mobile when eating, your concentration will not be in chewing the food. It is important to chew food properly, otherwise you may get indigestion problems [14:37] Try to be relaxed when you eat your meal, thanking God for whatever has been given to you [14:37] It is also important to FLOSS (dental) twice daily [14:38] Although, these are some of the good habits that you should inculcate, it is good to consult a doctor or dietitian if you want to follow a schedule that is healthy for you [14:38] back [14:39] I am yet to read the following book - https://pragprog.com/book/jkthp/the-healthy-programmer, but, I think it is relevant in today's session [14:39] I will now open it up for questions on eating habits [14:40] ! [14:40] next [14:40] ! [14:40] how do we control creavings? how we we differentiate between hunger and thirst? [14:40] *cravings [14:40] [14:41] Sometimes when you go out with friends or family, it is fine to have your craving, but, you need to keep a check on the same [14:41] jasonbraganza, eating fast food daily is not healthy, it is only convenience [14:42] jasonbraganza, but, it is how you learnt to control your mind; and not let food control you [14:42] jasonbraganza, you should also think about the after effects; if one eats a lot of fat, they may blow up, and the question that one should ask is do you want to be unhealthy? [14:43] Rajat Gupta (I'm sorry for being late) [14:43] !! [14:43] mbuf nope [14:43] jasonbraganza, so if one thinks about the after effects, then you will make a conscious decision; I am not saying do not eat fast food; once in a while, it is okay, but, don't make it a habit [14:43] ! [14:43] next [14:43] mbuf, why is it prevalent that programmers drink coffee/soft drinks while programming? Is it healthy? [14:43] thank you mbuf [14:43] ! [14:44] sidntrivedi012_, sorry, I do not take coffee or tea; that is probably peer pressure [14:44] ! [14:44] mbuf, ok. [14:44] sidntrivedi012_, it is not healthy, and I ask you to avoid them; your teeth will decay faster with soft drinks, and you may have to make lot of visits with the dentist [14:44] next [14:45] Whenever I code, I often think about food and I often end up eating a lot of fast food. Is there any way to control this thought of food while studying or coding? [14:45] ! [14:45] prabhuss, drinks spilt on keyboard or laptop is not good; you eat when you have to eat; you code when you have to code [14:45] prabhuss, it is the *nix philosophy of doing one thing, and doing it well [14:46] prabhuss, abide by it for productivity; learning to control your mind will take time and practice [14:46] mbuf, what is *nix philosophy? [14:46] prabhuss, FLOSS requires lot of discipline, and you need to learn it [14:46] prabhuss, Unix philosophy [14:46] next [14:47] okay, thanks mbuf and priyankasaggu119 [14:47] mbuf, How do we eat healthy when you are living by self? Cooking food seems to be the only option. And it kills a lot of time. [14:47] prabhuss, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_philosophy [14:47] prabhuss, https://www.amazon.com/Linux-Unix-Philosophy-Mike-Gancarz/dp/1555582737 [14:47] ananyo, You can eat outside, but, pick safe foods; warm food is good for you [14:48] ananyo, If you live in a society, there are people who may supply home cooked food [14:48] ananyo, you might need to find that out [14:48] next [14:49] mbuf: what is your opinion breakfast and if it is okay to just have coffee or a drink in the morning? [14:49] *on breakfast [14:49] [14:49] j605, there is a reason why it is called "breakfast" = "break" + "fast"; you need to see the time since your dinner and your meal in the morning [14:50] j605, there is acid in your stomach and it is so strong that it can actually burn your fingers [14:50] j605, if there is no food given to it, it will start eating your stomach walls (leading to ulcers) [14:50] j605, hence, you need to "break" the "fast", and eat proper breakfast [14:50] j605, never skip your breakfast [14:50] next [14:51] Drinking water is of the biggest issue I think I have, I forget to drink water often for several hours. Even same goes with eating habbit. Is there any time gap one should follow between food and water. [14:51] BhaveshSGupta[m], your pomodoro breaks [14:51] BhaveshSGupta[m], generally, you don't want to drink water before your meal, otherwise, your intake will be less [14:52] BhaveshSGupta[m], during breaks take water, fresh juice is also good [14:52] BhaveshSGupta[m], keep water next to you [14:53] It is very important to be physically fit because our nature of job is to sit in front of the computer for more than 8-10 hours every day [14:53] You need to do exercise at least 30 minutes every day [14:53] If you are doing jogging or running, it is best to do it in the morning, when there is fresh air [14:54] You can also do exercise (push yourself) when you are tired; because, when you sweat it out, your tiredness goes away, and you become active again [14:54] There are different types of workout - cardio, weights, fitness etc. [14:54] You need to put a schedule to alternate between them so that all the muscles in your body get equal exercise during the week [14:55] You can also log your activity so that you know how long you have been working out on your cardio, or weights, or general fitness [14:55] You can also play a sport, if you feel going to the gym or doing general exercise is boring [14:56] You can take professional coaching as well, so that when you play competitions, you are motivated to play well [14:56] If you decide to play a sport, you need to make sure you get your gear (t-shirt, shoes, equipment etc.) [14:56] You should also keep a check on your weight, and make sure you are fit [14:57] At least once a year, do a general check up. [14:57] You might also want to periodically visit your dentist, opthalmologist. [14:57] If you are doing exercise, make sure you also give enough rest for your body for the workout that you do [14:58] Do not over do the exercise as well; it might be good to consult a trainer or coach [14:58] Of course, you will have to invest time and money, as required; but, it is beneficial in the long run [14:58] Unless you are fit, your mind cannot think, and you will not be able to work effectively, and be productive in your work [14:59] I will now take questions on exercise [15:00] ! [15:00] ! [15:00] next [15:00] what do you use to track this type of event? [15:00] I have tried google fit before. [15:00] mbuf: what is the difference between yoga and exercise? [15:01] ! [15:01] ! [15:01] j605, Yoga has different variants; the traditional one is meditation and flexibility; these days there is Power Yoga as well [15:01] poojaencoded, ^^ [15:02] poojaencoded, exercise generally is cardio and weights [15:02] I think the messages got mixed up since they were just 1s apart, sorry [15:02] poojaencoded, but, you can also exercise for general fitness [15:02] poojaencoded, the age of the person, and any injury is also taken into account on what exercise they can and should not do [15:03] j605, I don't use any device for tracking since I care for privacy [15:03] j605, as of now I just measure the time I spend on exercise and play table tennis; both come in the category of EXERCISE in OBM [15:03] next [15:03] next [15:04] mbuf, Do indoor games like Table Tennis and Foosball help? [15:04] j605, it is a private version of OBM [15:05] ananyo, I am not sure about Foosball, but, TT is a fast game, called as high-speed chess [15:05] ananyo, one needs to be physically fit and agile to move and play TT; you sweat a lot too, and is refreshing [15:06] ananyo, playing in competitive tournaments motivates one to improve the game as well; also, you get to make friends out of your tech circle [15:06] ananyo, the same applies to other games as well [15:06] next [15:06] mbuf, What is your views about which time is best time for exercise. As I recently started to do exercise after office, but felt tired afterwards, which result in more sleep, less time in hand to work on other things. [15:07] [15:07] sandeepK, if you have not exercised for a period of time, and you suddenly start to exercise, you will face what is known as DOMS [15:07] sandeepK, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_onset_muscle_soreness [15:07] sandeepK, but, the trainer will insist that you continue to exercise with the pain [15:08] sandeepK, so, when you start to exercise after a gap, your intensity should be very low [15:08] sandeepK, slowly, you increase it, so that your body gets used to it [15:08] sandeepK, for the workout you do, your body needs good food, and rest as well [15:09] sandeepK, so, you need to balance it out; be patient; after a while, you will actually feel fresh after exercise, that you will want to work [15:09] sandeepK, because, your body is going through a change, you have give it time to get adjusted to the new routine [15:09] mbuf, ok, But I really feel that I sleep a lot and have not found a way to reduce it and when do exercise [15:09] sandeepK, patience [15:10] sandeepK, even for people who want to jog in the morning, they should walk first [15:10] sandeepK, then they should slowly increase the jogging rounds [15:10] ! [15:10] With time, your body will get used to it [15:10] next [15:11] mbuf, ok [15:11] Is it easier for lean guys to build muscles faster or the other way round? [15:11] jeet__, build muscle for what purpose? [15:11] To develop a good physique. [15:12] jeet__, for some sports, like TT, you need flexibility over muscle [15:12] jeet__, you can be lean and still be fit and active [15:12] jeet__, it depends on the physical activity that you plan to do [15:13] ! [15:13] next [15:13] mbuf, What is you thought about sleep, that one should have fix hours of sleep(7-8 hours) or should wake up naturally without any alarm ? [15:13] sandeepK, get enough sleep for the activity that you do [15:13] Thank You mbuf [15:13] sandeepK, having an alarm is not bad [15:14] sandeepK, if you follow a rhythm, your biological clock will wake you up automatically every day, at the same time [15:14] sandeepK, but, sometimes, if you have to wake up early to catch a flight or bus, or have to be ready for a meeting, you need an alarm to wake you up [15:14] sandeepK, but, try not to deviate too much from your regular routine [15:15] sandeepK, we are always looking for consistency in all your efforts, and we have said this many times [15:15] ! [15:16] sandeepK, winning one tournament is easy, but, performing consistently to be on the top is what separates the champions from the rest [15:16] next [15:16] mbuf, ok [15:16] I am lean, but fit. But I want to put on some weight to develop a good physique. What kind of balanced diet and must-include items we should include in our meals everyday? [15:16] jeet__, you might want to consult a doctor or dietitian [15:16] Let's move on the last section - Essentials [15:17] Based on the discussion that I have been having with all of you, I felt that most of you are missing some essentials that are required to work in our field [15:18] The first one is a decent Internet connection. We communicate online, browse online, read online, and hence having a decent Internet connectivity is a must. [15:18] If you happen to travel a lot, then invest in a good laptop [15:18] The laptop weight is mostly determined by its battery and screen size. [15:19] Or, if you are one at home or hostel, then, invest in a good desktop configuration [15:19] If you are buying hardware, make sure you buy the latest one, so that, it will last you for few years [15:19] You can change software far easily than hardware, so when you buy hardware, buy the latest (that supports FLOSS, of course) [15:20] If you have a desktop, learn how to assemble one, so that, you know how to troubleshoot when you have problems [15:20] You should also allocate budget for spending on books, reading material, training, hardware etc. [15:21] Nothing is free in this world, and hence, you should not invest to spend money on these [15:21] You are actually spending on yourself to improve, and, hence you should not think twice on these matters [15:21] The most important is to track time, and see where you are spending it [15:22] Balancing the time and money that you spend (and where you spend) is crucial for your improvement [15:22] I am not saying do not spend on your recreation; [15:22] I am saying that these are essential for you to keep yourself uptodate with the industry, and hence you should not think twice to spend on them [15:23] It is fine to invest money with FLOSS, and people do make lot of money with FLOSS [15:23] So, when it comes to improving yourself, never hesitate to spend money on technology, books, hardware, training etc. [15:24] With that I will open the floor for questions on all three topics - Eatery, Exercise and Essentials [15:24] ! [15:24] ! [15:25] next [15:25] ! [15:25] I am currently using hexchat. But,having used IRCcloud,I find it much better. But,it requires a subscription. So,should I buy it? [15:25] I mean IRCCloud requires a subscription of $50/year. [15:25] <__rex__> ! [15:26] ! [15:26] sidntrivedi012_, Do they do any work with F/OSS? [15:26] mbuf, IRCCloud? [15:27] sidntrivedi012_, yes [15:27] sidntrivedi012_, I do not mind paying for technical support and production maintenance, if the price is reasonable [15:27] sidntrivedi012_, and the organization contributes to F/OSS [15:27] ! [15:28] sidntrivedi012_, I see it as a way of encouraging others to contribute to F/OSS and get paid for it [15:28] next [15:28] mbuf, Does Dual booting Linux on Mac works well? The hardware of Mac is very good. So I was thinking of buying a Mac and Dual boot a Linux distro on it. [15:28] ananyo, It will work, but, the question is what you intend to use it for [15:29] ananyo, given a choice, I will prefer a *nix distro only [15:29] next [15:29] While reading online, I feel too sleepy. I try switching eyes away from the screen time to time, but do not help much. Anything you would recommend? [15:29] ann, you do need to move your eyes away from the screen time to time [15:29] ann, an opthalmologist will say that you need to look at distant objects as well [15:30] ann, You might want to have your eyes checked, if it hurts [15:30] ann, taking periodic breaks help a lot [15:30] mbuf ok but still it's an issue with me [15:30] ann, if you are feeling sleepy, try doing an exercise, and come back to your workstation [15:30] ann, you will feel refreshed; [15:31] ann, or do some other physical activity, and come back to work; someone suggested foosball [15:31] ann, carrom or darts or any other [15:31] next [15:31] <__rex__> Are standing desks any good or just hype? [15:31] <__rex__> ann, Try usign the night light feature on your screen (Gnome has it built in) [15:31] __rex__, good question; I have not tried it, so I cannot comment on it [15:31] __rex__: I use that only [15:32] __rex__, you might want to try it and see if it helps you [15:32] mbuf, its good.Reduce blue light emission. [15:32] __rex__, I do enough exercise, so, I am fine sitting in front of the computer [15:32] next [15:32] My travelling distance is large (from my home to hostel and opposite), and in the meantime I can't work on my laptop. Please suggest me some small laptop or palmtop which I can use while travelling. (Note: I travel by Govt. buses which are very crowdy). My budget is 10,000. [15:33] <__rex__> mbuf, will look into it, thanks [15:33] priyankasaggu119, there were some discussions on listening to audio podcasts for people who travel [15:33] priyankasaggu119, you can also watch lectures or tech videos during this time [15:33] ! [15:33] priyankasaggu119, I used to do this when I used to travel long distances in the start-up I worked previously [15:33] priyankasaggu119, stick to your phone. The weight of dfifferent gadgets and chargeers adds up and then causes back issues [15:34] priyankasaggu119, unless, of course, it is a strain for your eyes; and then you should stop [15:34] priyankasaggu119, I used to copy lectures to the phone, and listen to it when traveling in the train [15:34] priyankasaggu119, you need to prepare the video list, and then plan which ones you want to listen on which day [15:34] priyankasaggu119, quite productive, I must say [15:34] next [15:34] <__rex__> priyankasaggu119, I have a similar situation, I just listen to podcasts and read articles. [15:34] mbuf, I have a desktop and I want to know more about its hardware by dissembling and re-assembling it. But since I haven't done it before, I may do it wrong leading to complications. How should I go about it? [15:35] ohk mbuf. :) [15:35] ! [15:35] ! [15:35] jasonbraganza, :) [15:35] prabhuss, your test system should be different from your main desktop/laptop [15:35] prabhuss, never develop and test on the same system (that is my philosophy) [15:35] mbuf: can you suggest some podcasts? I spend 4hours travelling in a day. [15:36] prabhuss, slowly. take snapshots all along the way. keep different containers for different screws and tiny parts. use sticky tape to old tiny things. use an old system [15:36] mbuf: sorry I by mistake pressed enter :( [15:36] mbuf, yes it is different. [15:36] prabhuss, if you want to learn to assembly, try to get a not-so-expensive hardware that you can build just for testing [15:37] prabhuss, when you get a cheap hardware, it is fine to break it, or make it fail [15:37] prabhuss, your intention is not that, but, the risk is less; that is when you learn [15:37] prabhuss, if you have any friends to assist you, that will be helpful too [15:37] next [15:37] mbuf: can you suggest some podcasts? I spend 4hours travelling in a day. [15:37] devesh_verma, 4 hours! [15:37] thanks mbuf & jasonbraganza :) [15:37] devesh_verma, that depends on your area of interest [15:38] next [15:38] mbuf, Can you recommend me any open source softwares for time management on both windows and linux [15:38] prabhuss, no idea about Windows [15:39] prabhuss, but, you might want to search around and try them out to decide which one you like [15:39] prabhuss, the choice of FLOSS is great; so depending on your taste, you can pick one [15:39] prabhuss, that really suits your needs [15:39] next [15:39] already questioned by devesh_verma ,just want to know your favourite podcasts list. [15:39] <__rex__> devesh_verma, https://www.youtube.com/jupiterbroadcasting [15:39] mbuf, okay :) [15:40] prokbird, these days I do not listen to podcasts; [15:40] earlier. [15:40] prokbird, I have a lot of tech videos to watch though; still in my TODO Org file [15:40] __rex__: thanks [15:40] next [15:40] mbuf, link? [15:41] prokbird, it is a personal list, but, after I have watched and if I want others to watch, I tweet about it [15:41] prabhuss http://calnewport.com/blog/2008/06/30/monday-master-class-a-crash-course-in-student-time-management/ [15:41] prokbird, you can grep for "watch" at https://gitlab.com/shakthimaan/shakthimaan-tweets/blob/master/complete.txt [15:42] mbuf, thanks. [15:42] So, let's end the class now [15:42] Roll call [15:42] Prajit Mukherjee [15:42] Priyanka Saggu [15:42] Ashish Kumar Mishra [15:42] Anu Kumari Gupta [15:42] Bhavin Gandhi [15:42] Rishikesh Bamdale [15:42] Jason Braganza [15:42] Mayank Singhal [15:42] Shamik Nandi [15:43] pooja kumari singh [15:43] tabrez khan [15:43] Neeraj Kumar Arya [15:43] Bhavesh Gupta [15:43] Rayan Das [15:43] <__rex__> rakshit Airani [15:43] Sonia Singla [15:43] Shiva Saxena [15:43] pooja sulakhe [15:43] devesh verma [15:43] Sandeep Kumar Choudhary [15:43] Shital Mule [15:43] Prabhu Sharan Singh [15:43] I am not a doctor or dietitian or trainer. The objective of the session is to open up your mind to think about these aspects of your life, which are also important for you! [15:43] Naman Sharma [15:44] Ananyo Maiti [15:44] Muhammad Zeeshan Qazi [15:44] Thanks mbuf the session was amazing. ----END CLASS----
